“The Illume Saturnalia”
Part 1
In our 19th episode, the party goes to a carnival!
The Illume Saturnalia arrives at Khern in its annual trip around Cailum. The popular carnival is somewhat of a tradition in certain parts of the world and the people of Khern look to release some of the tension built up after the closure of the mines. As the party heads up towards the entrance of Khern, they are greeted with a wash of sites, smells, lights and music.
They begin the night by visiting ‘Mr K & Miss Ill’s Quick Throw’, a knife throwing contest. William steps up to throw first with Caithe being the first volunteer. She luckily escapes with just some minor grazes. When William and Caithe switch, however, he is not so lucky. Decker and Ever take double shots on Zagreus, who narrowly escapes two knives to the groin.
The next game that takes their fancy is a game called ‘Shadow Pick’- a team pick-pocketing challenge. The party decides to take on a group of teenagers in this challenge, the rules stating they should pick-pocket a coloured piece of cloth, trying to collect as many as possible, as they make their way around the rest of the carnival.
Zagreus, Ever and Decker peel away towards the Starberry Nook stall for candy floss. At the same time Zagreus shoulder checks past one of the teenages attempting to steal his coloured cloth. He instructs Decker to where the teen went, using his telepathy for the first time. She managed to slip around the pursuer and meet Zagreus in the crowd. In doing so, she also managed to acquire a yellow ribbon as the team’s first point.
Meanwhile, Caithe and William have a more difficult time with the elf and tabaxi teenages. They follow the crowd into the main tent, seeing a large performance area and bleachers filling up with people. The elvish teen is spotted, crouching down and trying to hide on the other side of the bleachers. Caithe and William try some quick planning and decide to create a ruse with Caithe’s ribbon presented overtly on show, with William attempting to pickpocket the teen. Their plan is foiled when William fails to retrieve the yellow cloth and the elf runs away. Caithe attempts to stop them in their tracks, however unsuspectingly loses her coloured cloth to the small tabaxi watching her from afar.
As William and Caithe attempt to stop the tabaxi teen from making off with their ribbons, William tries to pull the yellow ribbon from the tabaxi’s pocket. He becomes aware his whetstone has been dislodged as the smaller tabaxi makes off into the crowd.
After realising both their ribbons have been taken, William looks down at what he took from the tabaxi. It seems as though their luck is changing as he counts out twenty carnival credits that were acquired from the tabaxi’s pocket.
