“Bully Circle”, Part 2

Part 2

Welcome to part two of episode eighteen, “Bully Circle.”

The group awakens the morning after the fight in the tunnels, when Caithe and William begin discussing whether to visit the Professor again. They convince Zagreus, Decker and Ever to join the trip to the Research Centre of Paelogizmology. As the group discusses the sword that Caithe retrieved for Zagreus, the rest of the party discover that Zag is a warlock by blood and try to understand what this means for the use of the sword.

On the journey to visit Professor Brightrock they party decide to retrace their steps through the tunnel behind the mine entrance. They are stopped before getting to the entrance by The Iron Forge, who explain the area is closed due to the discovery of bodies. The Iron Forge attribute the bodies to being victims of the creatures that are prowling the mines and thus refuse entry to the party. Caithe offers the dock workers some help in exchange for a ride on a raft, and the group make their way over to see the Professor.

Once at the Research Centre, they are met by Haegin, the large orange dragonborn that William and Caithe had met the day before. Haegin shows Decker, Ever and Zagreus around the museum pieces and asks William about the cube. William and Caithe both squirm, as Decker, Zagreus and Ever become curious about what the ‘cube’ could be. The conversation quickly turns to the sword, with Haegin explaining it was found on a dig researching the ancient peoples of a city called Zephyr on the continent of Ialeth (yah-leth).

Zagreus surprises Haegin with the revelation that he has bonded with the sword. As he summons it in front of Haegin, Zagreus sees a vision of a searing fire and smoke, and hears a distinct flapping sound. Upon returning from this vision, the sword is gently smoking and Haegin feels a burning sensation on his hand. They agree that it is best not to tell the Professor of the developments, but will keep Haegin informed of any changes to the sword. Haegin offers a place to keep the cube safely whilst they attend the town hall meeting and William agrees.

The group make their way up to the town hall for the meeting about the closure of the mines. When they enter, they are met with the residents of Khern awash with chatter from both about the mines and the bodies that were discovered, with rumours that the creatures spotted in the mines did it. The Alderman offers the floor to both Mr Ironhide and Mr Ellvelon as they each try to convince the crowd of the pros and cons of reopening the mines. The Alderman agrees the mines need to be opened, but that it was too dangerous to send common folk and The Iron Forge do not hold jurisdiction within the Mines. He then asks for a volunteer to help clear the mines of the creatures seen stalking around.

William immediately volunteers and looks to the group to do the same. He manages to win the crowd over in time for the vote to be cast. When the residents of Khern vote to send the volunteers into the mines, there is a rush of whispers as people begin to be excited by the news that their mines will reopen once again. The Alderman asks for anyone that would vouch for the group, and they are surprised to see an old Professor Brightrock offer his approval.

Once the people of Khern leave the hall, there is a general sense of excitement that the prospect of reinvigorating the city with both the mines opening up and the carnival arriving in town. The group head back out and follow the crowds towards the carnival.
