“To Yoink, or not to Yoink?”
In the fourteenth episode, the party head to The House of Sacred Silence to return the book of healing spells and the ritual bowl that was acquired after their encounter with the banshee. Across Cailum The Order of the Sacred Silence – followers of Neisis, The Healer – run abodes, calling them The House of Sacred Silence. The order gets their namesake from the practice of silence within the inner chambers, in a show of reverence for the trials of Neisis. As necromancy is ill-favoured in Eutrea, the party begins to feel the weight of carrying this type of contraband in their possession. The tome that the group found appeared to have been altered in some way to reverse the healing spells into necromancy spells.
The group takes the note from Marie that stated that her sister’s remaining possessions were to be given to the group after they helped lay her to rest. They are met at the entrance by an elf with peach skin, a shaved head and thick dark eyebrows. As the party enter The House of Sacred Silence they cross through the inner chamber and Ever takes note of the large stained glass windows depicting the trials of Neises, including an image of him holding a sleeping man. As she is distracted by this image, Ever almost crashes into a cleric carrying a metal tray of instruments who threatens to break the sacred silence of the inner chamber. Luckily for Ever the cleric catches the metal tray and they continue their way through the chamber.
They are led to the office chamber by the cleric who met them at the entrance; he introduced himself as Friar Ruvyn Gredi of the Khernish House of Sacred Silence. Once the remaining possessions have been signed over to the group, Zagreus takes the lead in explaining how the tome and ritual bowl were acquired and how necromancy may be involved. Brother Gredi assures them he will reach out and nervously ushers the party out.
With their coin purses a little more full, the group decide to head to an antique shop called Tales Untold, run by the slightly distractible, Mabel Willowwind. The companions spend some time looking around the antique shop, guided by Mabel. As William is being shown the inventory by Mabel, Ever uses her ability to check whether there were any magical auras around any of the objects in the store. Upon identifying a number of magical items, Ever, William and Caithe create a situation to distract Mabel and take an elemental gem from a nearby glass cabinet.
Unfortunately, Ever and William fumble their attempts to steal the gem, and William’s guilty conscience leads him to try and return it, to the behest of Caithe. Seeing her friend’s guilt over stealing the gem she decides to cover the hand off, blocking Mabel from witnessing these strangers try and return a previously stolen gem. Inexperienced with the skill of stealing and returning, the gem slips from William’s grasp and he does not see where it lands. Upon realising the plan to return the stolen gem went awry, the party make haste away from the shop back into the streets of Khern. Not long after leaving Tales Untold, Ever, Caithe and Zagreus find that William had acquired the gem unintentionally, as it lay lodged in his boot.
SIDE QUEST! | "All Hallows Eve" | Part 4 | Second Half – The Dragon‘s Vale Podcast
In the episode…
The sites of the House of Sacred Silence appear across Cailum. The Houses are run by The Order of Sacred Silence – healers and followers of Neisis, Deity of Healing, Medicine, Life and Death. His followers train to be Clerics of the highest order at one of the houses, and once trained, are free to practise healing at an established house or if they are good enough, establish their own house.
The Dragon’s Vale | 14 | “To Yoink, or not to Yoink?”
The Houses are set up to administer healing to mortally wounded creatures. Most Houses solely treat humanoids, however there are a select number that will treat animals too.
A trip to the House of Sacred Silence is a dire one indeed, and much of their more intense healing is performed on those close to dying. The other reason that one would visit the House was to make someone comfortable before they passed. To some of the followers of Niesis there is a steadfast line between saving someone’s life and encroaching on death’s realm.
