“Paper Thin Walls”

In episode eight, William and Caithe discover something very interesting about the cube and the party step in to help a distressed neighbour of Mrs Buttercup.

As the group arrive at The Buttercup Boarding House they are met by a friendly female Dwarf, Mrs Buttercup. She welcomes them into the boarding house and provides food and drink for the party, offering them somewhere to stay for the evening. They quickly learn that Mrs Buttercup enjoys a gossip and she lets them know that her neighbours are staying due to the loss of their home that was attacked in the middle of the night. As the evening wore on, the party took the opportunity to look around the lovely little cottage and William grabs a book from the library to use as an excuse to head upstairs and ‘read’ in bed. As ‘goodnights’ are exchanged, the party split into three rooms; with Zagreus and Ever sharing and Caithe and William in another room. Decker happily took a tiny box room to herself, with room for a short bed only.

Whilst nightly routines got underway, William and Caithe put themselves in an awkward situation when Caithe returns from the bath wrapped in a towel. Neither William or Caithe has shared a room with another person, since living at the Institute does not allow the sharing of rooms. The situation gets worse when Caithe sees the book that William haphazardly grabbed is entitled ‘Forbidden Lust’, complete with the illustration of an Orc and a Gelatinous Cube on the front cover.

Upon investigating the cube and slotting in the green glass square that William has been carrying, the room is suddenly filled with a three dimentional projection that changes every time the cube is moved. After more investigation, Caithe thinks she recognises one sphere to have some kind of land markings and possibly even leylines. Unknown to them, their loud whispering makes its way through the walls into Zagreus and Ever’s room. Although the two can’t hear exactly what is being said, they are picking up some words here and there. The whispering is also making its way to Mrs Buttercup, who has to knock on the door more that once to ask them to keep it down during the night.

Late into the night the whole party, separate as they are, eventually fall into a deep sleep. It doesn’t last long however. In the darkness of night, Zagreus is the first to awake to a loud and hurried knock on the door. Mrs Buttercup opens it to see her neighbour, Marie, in a state of distress. Marie explains how her sister had appeared to her even though, as Mrs Buttercup had noted, she had passed about a month ago.

Mrs Buttercup enlists the help of the party to return to Marie’s home and check it is secure and to ensure Marie’s fears are put to rest.
